Zaccaria Crazy Kong Maintenance 2022

02/06/2022 - Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show (2022)

In the several years I've had games in the show, this was the first time glassware was broken in transport :(

Crazy Kong monitor glass taped Zaccaria games at the Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show

The monitor glass and shards were removed, reassembled on the bench, and both sides taped together with Scotch tape for the game to continue in the show. The game ran without issue from start to finish.

11/03/2023 - Player 2 control input investigation

Crazy Kong game PCB connector

Whilst constructing a JAMMA adaptor for a Zaccaria Eyes restoration, I noticed that Crazy Kong linked the player 1 and player 2 control inputs together on the upright cabinet, also confirmed in the Zaccaria manual. I hadn't done this during the Crazy Kong restoration and play tested a two-player game that confirmed the Falcon game PCB I was using played OK for both players without the external player 2 inputs linked.

30/04/2023 - Game PCB repair, part 1

Crazy Kong not booting

Pre-show testing found the game PCB not booting and it was removed for repair. I hadn't yet sourced a reproduction monitor glass to replace the one broken in the 2022 show.

Falcon Crazy Kong game PCB on the bench

On the bench the game PCB booted and ran OK except for some sounds being stuck in a continuous repeat loop. The coin-up sound stuck first, and then the hammer sound during game play. There is a sample playback circuit on this game and poking around with a scope confirmed the repeating sounds were from sample playback. Starting with the sample address counters IC 3P, 3N and 3M (LS161) found that the outputs didn't look like a usual counter divide. Further, using the HP Comparator flagged all outputs on all three as mismatched. Trying a piggyback on IC 3P resulted in poor clamped outputs and only a single audio tone. Replacing the counter at the start of the chain, IC 3M (LS161), fixed the compare of all three counters 3P, 3N and 3M but there was still a repeating sample fault.

The game submission for the 2023 show was limited to one truck of 24 games. I had no spare Crazy Kong game PCB, a broken monitor glass, a potential cabinet electrical issue, and a game PCB with a sound fault so this game didn't make the cut for 2023.
